Did you know?
- East German Waldemar Cierpinski won his second gold Olympic medal in the marathon of the Moscow Olympics. His accomplishment was of great significance, because together with the Ethiopian champion Abebe Bikila they were the only athletes until then to have won two gold Olympic medals in the marathon, in successive organizations at that.
- The jumps and throws were dominated by the Soviets and the East Germans. One of the best performances was that of East German Gerd Wessig in the high jump, where he set a new world record, in order to win the Olympic winner of 1976 Jacek Wszola.
- In the 100m event the British Allan Wells gained the victory, the first for his country in that event after 56 years. However, the judges had to consult the photo finish before awarding the victory to the British champion, seeing that Cuban Silvio Leonard had fallen on the tape with him. The runner of Scottish descent, whose trainer was his wife, had not used a starting block until 1980.
- In men's volleyball, the team of the Soviet Union won the gold medal beating in the final the team of Bulgaria with 3 sets to 1. Nevertheless, the show was stolen by the team of Libya with its negative performance that surprised those who watched its games. It lost all five games in which it participated. It lost all 15 sets and won only 30 points, losing 225.
- In women's gymnastics the Romanian Nadia Comaneci and the Soviet Nelli Kim shared first place in the floor exercises and won their second gold medal respectively, the Romanian in the beam and the Soviet in the team competition. The winner in the individual all-around exercises was the Soviet Yelena Davydova, whereas Comaneci shared, in this event too, the second place with East German Maxi Gnauck. The judges' marking was once more an issue that gave rise to protest.
