Prokopios: General Belisarios' secretary and legal adviser (527-539), high official and author. Born in Caesarea (Palestine) around 500, died around 560. Prokopios' works, probably written in the 550's, are a primary source of information on Justinian's reign. His Wars' (Hyper ton polemon logoi) give detailed accounts of military and diplomatic exploits, many of which he witnessed personnally. His second work, entitled Buildings' (Peri ktismaton) describes the numerous construction works undertaken by Justinian. His notorious Secrete History' (Anekdota) is a vicious invective against Justinian, Theodora and other principals of the reign.
