During the Angevin rule (1267-1386) a consensus policy was pursued on the religious front and the orthodox clergy was treated favourably. Still, the orthodox ecclesiastical leadership was replaced by a Latin one and its property was surrendered to the Catholic Church. This condition did not alter in the future. After a first attempt to reduce the influence of the Orthodox Church and because the orthodox clergy had reacted strongly, the priests of the city and the nobles of Corfu were given the right to elect a protopapas (head priest).

The Angevin authorities, despite their conciliatory policy on the religious front, were often forced to intervene in favour of the orthodox clergy in order to secure former privileges and redress the injustices that the different deputies had committed.
