Michael I Angelos: Michael I Komnenos Doukas, or Angelos, was a cousin of the Byzantine emperors Isaac and Alexios III Angelos. When the Byzantine empire disintegrated following the victory of the crusaders, he established the state of Epiros, with Arta as its capital, and became an independent ruler (1205-15).
