The Roman emperors and dignitaries are often referred to, in honorific inscriptions in the marketplaces of Hellenic cities and in great Panhellenic temples, as 'patrons and benefactors'. Typical client relationships were made by Marcus Agrippa at Sparta, by Gaius Caesar at Athens, and by the emperor Tiberius at Mytilene.
