The book ?Plato's Rhapsody and Homer's Music? by Mr. Gregory Nagy, Professor of Classical Studies and President of the Centre of Greek Studies of the University of Harvard, is a treatise dealing with the relation between the Homeric epics and the Panathenaic Festival. The author argues that there is a relation between these two institutions and he supports his view through the tools of the philologist, that is etymology and sociolinguistics. It is based on references found in PlatoΆs work, whom he considers an essential source of information regarding the ?meeting? of Homer and the Panathenaic Festival. Without him the available testimonies (literary, iconographic, epigraphic) are so weak that they would make any reconstruction impossible. The authorΆs basic argument is that the Panathenaic Festival can be considered a significant historic factor in the final formulation of the Iliad and the Odyssey.

FHW, as part of its effort to establish collaborations with cultural and academic institutions with similar objectives, has established for quite some time now a collaboration with the Centre of Greek Studies of the University of Harvard in Washington. Mr Gregory Nagy, Professor of Classical Studies, has been the President of the Centre since 2000. The result of this collaboration is the creation of a series of scientific publications, which will be distributed all over the world through Harvard University Press. The books will deal with special aspects of Greek culture.
