The book is an original linguistic (onomatological) study in which the author analyses the etymology of Christian and family names of Hellenes from Pisidika-Asia Minor. The names are examined as evidence for the social structure, economic and professional activity and cultural, spiritual and intellectual life of the people of Pisidika. Mr Vogiatzoglou's work, though not a historical study as such, is an important contribution to the history and culture of Pisidikan Hellenism, since historic realities and attitudes are echoed in the names.

Hellenism in Pisidika, with a cultural history of three thousand years, managed to maintain its national consciousness, customs and manners, as well as its adherence to the Christian religion. The course of its history was changed by submission to the Ottomans, their ban on the use of the spoken Hellenic language, and the final prevailence of Turkish throughout the Ottoman Empire. The role of Christian names in preserving national and religious tradition now became significant. Characteristic of this was the blessing at a christening "may the child live under its name", meaning, may it not suffer Islamization, as well as the special importance given to the "name day" of the Christians. The Great Persecution of 1922 forced the Hellenes of Pisidika out of their ancestral land, when they settled in various regions of Hellas and gave a new lease of life to the Hellenic economy.

Mr Vogiatzolglou has drawn his material from the municipal register of Nea Ionia in Attica, founded by Pisidikan refugees; from other communities in northern Greece; from the archives of the "Association of Sparta"; from his own personal archives; and from eye witness accounts of Pisidikans. The publication is enhanced by rare photographs of personalities and families from Pisidika and documentation on the emigration of Pisidikan refugees to Greece.
