The publication starts with a brief reference to the history of the city, which became successively the seat of Roman, Byzantine, Latin and Greek kings and throughout its history found itself at the centre of important historical moments.

Then, follows the history of the city divided according to periods of time, with the respective monuments. Particular emphasis is given to the Byzantine period of Thessaloniki, which is considered the "golden" period of the city, justifiably so, since during the twelve centuries of the city's history, the heyday, the decline and the fall of the Byzantine state, has left its marks on the city's monuments. A special chapter is dedicated to Ottoman Thessaloniki, with the Turkish baths, the bezestens (commercial stoas) and its springs, many of which still adorn the city.

Finally, the reader has the opportunity to learn about the contemporary aspect of the city, to follow routes through its neighborhoods and to discover hidden attractions. The publication also includes the representations of monuments, pictures and drawings from the most important findings of the excavations.
