Territorial reconstruction

In the field of Greece's territorial reconstruction after the liberation (October 1944), the situation was even more complicated. As the Greek territory had been divided among the Axis powers and Bulgaria, the withdrawal of the German occupying troops from the Balkan peninsula left behind it a vacuum of power.

At the same time, in a similar development to the First World War, the countries which had participated in the victorious coalition wished to receive territorial rewards at the end of the war, in recognition of their efforts and encumbrances. For this reason, from the first moment of the country's occupation, the exiled Greek government sought specific guarantees by the British regarding the future territorial map of Greece.
