Perhaps nowhere else, in no other country, was the development of sport influenced so strongly and directly by the "revival" of the Olympic Games in modern times. The association of the Games with the Greek Antiquity and its importance in shaping the ideology of the Greek State and the collective identity of the Greek society were the prerequisites for the creation of the Greek sports institutions and mechanisms. The turning point in this process was the entrustment to Athens of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
This unit presents the history of Greek sport in its first
steps, in the late 19th - early 20th century.
