Facts
The foundation of the independent Greek State in the early 1830s inaugurated a series of transformations in all the spheres of economic, tsocial and political life that constituted the neo-Greek society, making it part of the modern world. An aspect of this dynamic procedure was the gradual adoption of attitudes of life, rules of behaviour and cultural practices that prevailed at that time in the West and characterized the modern civilization.
The development of the Greek sports institutions dates from the last quarter of the 19th century. The milestone in that procedure was the entrustment of the first modern Olympic Games to Greece. The 1896 Games accelerated the processes of development of Greek sport, broadened its social basis and formed the Greek sports structure (associations, federations, games) and its characteristics.
