The jumper

One of the differences between the ancient and the modern jumper was that the ancient jumper used the halteres to achieve maximum speed. It is not fully verified whether the athletes ran in order to achieve maximum speed before making the jump. However, the representations on the vessels show that the jumper ran towards the bater holding the halteres, swinging them back and forth and then jumped with his arms stretched forwards. The moment he landed on the pit with his legs closed, the athlete threw the halteres backwards.
