Social organization

The political and military administration of the kingdom was assigned to Latin nobles, of Lombard descent mostly. The Greeks were excluded from the exercise of power and the Byzantine institutions that were in force in the region before 1204, were replaced by western ones. During the period that the Lombard lords ruled the kingdom (after 1207), influence from the north of Italy grew stronger, whereas the Lombard soldiers assumed to defend Thessalonika.

Society was organized on the basis of the feudal western models. The Latins transformed the land of the former Byzantine aristocracy into feudal lots and redistributed it among them, thus constituting the top of the social pyramid. The Greek nobles that remained in their lands and came to terms with the conquerors were integrated into the lower feudal strata. The majority of the Greek population stayed out of the feudal hierarchy, simply serving the new status.
