Economy

Thessalonika was the centre of the economic life of the kingdom. The city's harbour was a pole of attraction for many merchants of Italian descent, mainly Venetians and Genoeses. However, its economy was based primarily on agriculture and not on trade. Coins had been minted in the kingdom, despite its short-lived existence. Although no coins inscribed with the name of some Latin king have come to light, coins such as the trachea (bronze) and half tetartera (golden, devalued) date back to the period of the Latin occupation in Thessalonika.
