Economic development

In the city of Salona the Greeks had numerical prevalence over the other nationalities of the region. The Greeks lived isolated from their foreign governors, especially during the Catalan rule (1311-1380). The only profession that the Greeks of Salona could exercise was the notarial profession. Besides, there must have been a Jewish community settled at the north of the city's castle (possibly the owners of the tanneries were Jews), although there is a surviving reference to only one Jew in the region.

The city's outlet to the sea was the harbour of Itea (Krisa), which was small and possibly with limited commercial activity, but which offered relatively quick transit to the ports of south Italy. In 1304, another port of the county was Vitrinitza in the Corinthian gulf. In time, the county of Salona had known such an economic prosperity that in the 13th century two counts of the family of d' Aurtemoncourt, Thomas II and Thomas III minted their own coin. Two tornesi have been discovered that bear on the obverse the name of the two rulers (THOMAS) with the Italian name of the county (LA SOLA). On the reverse there was a cross and the escutcheon of the family of d’ Autremoncourt or a church.
