Ecclesiastical organization

As regards the ecclesiastical organization, Bodonitsa was a bishopric (bishopric of Thermopylae), which came under the jurisdiction of the Latin archbishopric of Athens. From 1371, or even earlier, the marquisate had an orthodox bishop (the bishop of Mendenitsa), who came under the orthodox metropolitan of Larissa and later, in the 15th century, under the metropolitan of Athens. Near the castle of Bodonitsa there was an orthodox monastery, where the metropolitan of Athens Michael Choniates had sought refuge after the Latin conquest in 1204.
