Upon the foundation of the duchy of the Aegean, a Latin archbishopric was established in Naxos, which included the bishopric of Milos, Santorini, Tinos and Syros. The property of the Orthodox church was confiscated and a Greek protopapaswas appointed, who had to pledge acknowledgement to the papal primacy. Administratively he came under the Latin archbishop and had under his control the Orthodox clergy of every island. The Orthodox priests paid an annual tax and as a token of submission a hen and a day's corvée. The Catholics who came to the duchy settled at the castles, whereas the Orthodox people lived in the burgo and in the villages.
