Irene Eulogia Choumnaina
Irene Eulogia Choumnaina (1291-ca.1355):
Daughter of Nikephoros Choumnos and widow of the despotes John Palaiologos, son of Andronikos II. She was widowed at 16, became a nun and spent her fortune on charitable works and on the restoration of the Philanthropos Soter monastery. She built up a rich personal library and studied with Theoleptos, acquiring an wide education, financed the copying of manuscripts. She became an active anti-Palamite.
