The most ancient find to date offering a vivid image of Minoan towns is the Town Mosaic, a series of faience plaques found in the Temple repository of Knossos. These plaques were probably placed on a plate made of perishable material, or maybe on a wooden chest. Each depicts the facade of a house, and combine into a representation of a Minoan town. Other fragments of the same representation depict animals, trees and waves, which means that the composition also included elements of both town life and the surrounding nature.
