The Holocene is the first postglacial period of the Quarternary and follows the Pleistocene which goes back to 12,000 BP. The Holocene is the period that extends to the present.

The warm climatic conditions of the Holocene had direct consequences on the flora and fauna and subsequently on the economy and settlement behaviour of human groups.

The early (Praeboreal-Boreal) and middle Holocene (Atlantikum-Subboreal) correspond culturally with the Mesolithic, the Neolithic and the Bronze Age.
