Justinian I. Emperor of the Eastern Roman empire, which flourished during his reign
(from 527 to his death in 565). His law code and building programme were of special
importance. The aim of his foreign policy - temporarily realized through campaigns
in Italy, North Africa and Spain - was to extend Byzantine rule over the
Western Roman empire.
